At Equi Consultancy Partners, we've seen how Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives continue to play a pivotal role in shaping workplaces across the globe. However, recent data from a Pew Research Center survey reveals a nuanced shift in attitudes towards DEI among U.S. workers.
The survey found that while a majority of U.S. workers still view DEI efforts positively, there has been a slight increase in the proportion who see these initiatives as having a negative impact. This shift is particularly pronounced among certain demographic groups, including white men and Republicans.
Key findings from the survey
The Pew Research Center survey found that 56 per cent of U.S. workers say a focus on DEI at work is a good thing, down from 61 per cent in 2021. Meanwhile, 16 per cent say it is a bad thing, up from 13 per cent in 2021. The remaining 28 per cent say it neither helps nor hurts.
The survey also found significant variation by demographic group. Among white workers, 49 per cent say DEI is a good thing, compared with 78 per cent of Black workers, 74 per cent of Hispanic workers and 65 per cent of Asian workers. Among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, only 29 per cent say DEI is a good thing, compared with 78 per cent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents.
What this means for organisations
The shift in attitudes towards DEI among some segments of the workforce presents both a challenge and an opportunity for organisations. The challenge is that DEI initiatives may face more internal resistance than in previous years, particularly from employees who feel that these efforts are unfair or counterproductive.
The opportunity is to use this moment to strengthen the evidence base for DEI efforts and communicate more clearly about what these initiatives are designed to achieve and how they benefit all employees, not just those from underrepresented groups.
At Equi Consultancy Partners, we help organisations navigate these challenges by developing DEI strategies that are grounded in evidence, clearly communicated and designed to build broad support across the workforce. If your organisation is looking to strengthen its approach to DEI in the current environment, we welcome the conversation.
