Board Diversity in Australia is Improving but Gaps Persist

At Equi Consultancy Partners, we believe that strong governance and inclusive leadership go hand in hand. The newly released 2025 Board Diversity Index, produced by Watermark Search International in partnership with Deloitte, provides a comprehensive picture of board composition across Australia's ASX 200 companies.

The report shows meaningful progress in gender diversity at the board level. Women now hold 35.1 per cent of ASX 200 board seats, up from 33.2 per cent in 2024. This represents a significant improvement from a decade ago, when women held fewer than 20 per cent of board positions.

Progress on gender diversity

The increase in female board representation reflects sustained effort from organisations, investors and regulators over many years. The 30% Club Australia, the ASX Corporate Governance Principles, and investor pressure have all contributed to this shift. Several ASX 200 companies now have gender-balanced boards, and the number of all-male boards has fallen to near zero.

Persistent gaps in other dimensions

Despite progress on gender, the report highlights significant gaps in other dimensions of diversity. Cultural diversity remains limited, with directors from non-English-speaking backgrounds significantly underrepresented relative to the Australian population. The report found that only 14 per cent of ASX 200 directors were born in a non-English-speaking country, compared with 21 per cent of the broader Australian population.

Age diversity also remains a challenge. The average age of ASX 200 directors is 62, and directors under 50 remain rare. This raises questions about whether boards have the range of perspectives needed to navigate rapidly changing business environments.

What this means for organisations

The data reinforces that diversity at the board level requires intentional effort across multiple dimensions, not just gender. Organisations that focus solely on gender risk missing the broader benefits of diverse perspectives in governance.

At Equi Consultancy Partners, we work with boards and executive teams to develop governance frameworks that embed diversity across all dimensions. If your organisation is looking to strengthen board diversity and inclusive governance, we welcome the conversation.
